BYD Atto 3: China's EV Giant Takes on South Africa
BYD has arrived in South Africa with the Atto 3. Is it good enough to convert local buyers to electric?

BYD — Build Your Dreams — is the world's best-selling electric vehicle brand. When the Chinese giant announced its South African entry in 2023, the local automotive industry paid attention. Now the Atto 3 is here in Standard Range (60.5kWh, 420km WLTP) and Extended Range (87.3kWh, 480km WLTP) configurations. We spent a week with the entry model.
**What Is It?**
The Atto 3 is a B-segment SUV — similar in size to a Toyota Corolla Cross but with a very different design language. BYD's "Ocean Aesthetics" design philosophy delivers a futuristic exterior that's polarising but undeniably bold. Guitar-string door handles, 18-inch aero alloys and full-width LED lighting make it stand out in traffic.
**Driving**
With 150kW and 310Nm delivered instantly to the front wheels, the Atto 3 is quick — 7.3 seconds to 100km/h feels faster thanks to the immediate electric torque delivery. At city speeds, it's effortlessly quiet and smooth. The regenerative braking is adjustable between four levels; we settled on Level 2 for a balance between energy recovery and natural feel.
Highway driving in the 120-130km/h speed range is where range anxiety starts creeping in. Our test unit showed a real-world consumption of approximately 18.5kWh/100km at 120km/h — meaning approximately 327km of actual highway range from the 60.5kWh battery.
**Charging**
South Africa's charging infrastructure remains a work in progress. The Atto 3 supports DC fast charging at up to 60kW, meaning a 30-80% charge takes approximately 40 minutes. We used Rubicon Electrical's network of 60kW chargers on our test routes — coverage in Gauteng is good but thins out considerably on inter-city routes.
**Interior**
The interior is where BYD surprises most. A 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen dominates the dashboard — press a button and it rotates between portrait and landscape orientation. The toggle design of the climate controls has an interactive quality that feels genuinely fresh. Build quality is competitive with Japanese equivalents.
**Verdict**
The Atto 3 is a genuinely impressive first EV offering for South Africa. At R649,900 with a standard 8-year/160,000km battery warranty, it's competitive value. The charging infrastructure limitations are real but improving. If you live in Gauteng, Cape Town or Durban and have home charging, the Atto 3 makes compelling sense.
