BMW M3 Competition xDrive: The Perfect Daily Supercar?
We take BMW's 375kW twin-turbo saloon to Zwartkops Raceway and on the streets of Sandton to find out

Three hundred and seventy-five kilowatts. In a four-door saloon that you can park in a shopping centre. The BMW M3 Competition xDrive sits in a peculiar market position — it's faster than most supercars while offering the practicality of a conventional car.
BMW sent us the M3 Competition xDrive for a week that included two track sessions at Zwartkops Raceway and five days of Sandton commuting. The result was an education in contradictions.
**On the Road**
With drive mode set to Comfort, the M3 is a surprisingly civil companion in traffic. The adjustable M adaptive suspension softens to absorb Sandton's potholes — imperfectly, but adequately. The seats provide all-day support. The 3D digital displays and iDrive 8 infotainment are class-leading. It genuinely functions as a daily driver.
In Sport or Sport Plus mode, the character transforms completely. The 3.0-litre S58 twin-turbo engine develops its full 375kW with a soundtrack engineered to raise the hairs on your arms. The M Steptronic 8-speed gearbox fires off gear changes in a fraction of a second.
**On Track**
Zwartkops Raceway — a tight, technical 2.4km circuit in Pretoria — revealed the M3's true nature. In Pure M4 mode with stability control reduced, the all-wheel-drive system can be configured to allow significant rear bias, giving the car a playful, adjustable character on corner exit.
The carbon-ceramic brakes (optional at R120,000 — our test car had them) are extraordinary, providing fade-free stopping power lap after lap.
**Should You Daily It?**
If you can afford the R2,299,900 price and the approximately R3,500 per 15,000km service cost, the M3 Competition xDrive is probably the most impressive all-rounder on South African roads. Nothing else combines this level of performance with genuine everyday usability.
