The Volkswagen Polo GTI has grown up considerably from its early iterations. The current model — based on the MQB A0 platform — uses the same 2.0-litre EA888 turbopetrol engine found in the Golf GTI, producing 152kW and 320Nm in the smaller, lighter Polo body. The result is a formidable hot hatch that delivers Golf GTI performance levels at a price R150,000 lower, in a package R250mm shorter overall. On Johannesburg''s urban roads, the Polo GTI feels genuinely special. The 2.0T produces its 320Nm from just 1,500rpm — the throttle response is immediate and the accelerative punch between 60 and 130km/h is deeply satisfying. The 7-speed DSG manages the power delivery with surgical precision; paddle shifts respond in under 200 milliseconds. The handling is the Polo GTI''s standout quality. The front-wheel-drive chassis — assisted by an optional electronic differential lock (standard on our test car) — dispatches fast corners with minimal understeer. The weighting of the steering is close to perfect: light enough at parking speeds, natural and consistent at speed. Where the Polo GTI struggles is interior size. The rear seat is tight for adults; the 251L boot is smaller than practical cars in the segment. Buyers choosing the Polo GTI are accepting this compromise for the driving rewards it offers. At R579,900, the Polo GTI is outstanding value. The R729,900 Golf GTI offers more space and refinement — but the Polo''s weight advantage and agility make it the more entertaining car to drive fast.
