Six months ago, WheelTalk took delivery of a Land Rover Defender 110 P400 X. Over the following 25,000 kilometres, we drove it through Johannesburg traffic, over Lesotho mountain passes, along the Garden Route and through the Kalahari. This is what we learned.
**The Good**
The Defender's off-road capability is simply extraordinary. Ground clearance of 291mm, wading depth of 900mm, approach angle of 38 degrees — the numbers suggest a capable off-roader, and the reality lives up to them. Descending the steep passes through Sani Pass into Lesotho, the Terrain Response system managed traction on loose, wet rocks so effectively that it felt almost effortless.
On-road, the 3.0-litre inline-six mild hybrid powertrain delivers its 294kW and 550Nm with refined urgency. Zero to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds is genuinely impressive for a vehicle this size and weight. Highway cruising reveals impressive refinement — road noise at 120km/h is well suppressed, and the air suspension (standard on X trim) delivers an exceptional ride quality.
**The Interior**
The Defender X's interior is a genuine luxury experience. Pivi Pro infotainment with OTA updates, configurable displays, 14-speaker Meridian audio and a refrigerated front centre console create an environment that justifies the price.
**The Challenges**
Fuel consumption. Our 25,000km average was 13.4L/100km — considerably above Land Rover's claimed 10.8L/100km. Averaging R22 per litre, fuel for six months cost approximately R74,000. Factor this into ownership costs.
Reliability. We experienced one air suspension fault that required an overnight dealer visit and a software glitch that required a system reset. Neither was catastrophic, but the Land Rover's reputation for unreliability has some basis in truth.
**Verdict**
The Defender 110 P400 X is an extraordinary vehicle — capable, luxurious and deeply desirable. At R2,299,900, it's also extraordinary expensive. But for buyers who genuinely need this level of capability combined with luxury, there's nothing else quite like it.
