Pros

  • Bold and distinctive design
  • Industry-leading 7-year warranty
  • Outstanding specification at price
  • Refined 1.6T engine

Cons

  • Polarising exterior design
  • Rear visibility reduced by styling
  • No AWD option in SA at this trim
The fifth-generation Kia Sportage is the most dramatic redesign in the model''s history. The "Opposites United" design language — bold angular exterior lines contrasting with a smooth curved interior — is genuinely striking. Some will love it; none will ignore it. The GT-Line trim level at R619,900 positions the Sportage against mid-spec Volkswagen Tiguans and Ford Escapes. At this price, it comes fully equipped: 12.3-inch curved display (combining driver cluster and infotainment), heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and Kia''s Advanced Driver Assistance System package. The 1.6-litre turbopetrol producing 132kW and 265Nm drives the front wheels through a 7-speed DCT. Performance is strong — 8.5 seconds to 100km/h feels faster given the electric-motor-like low-end torque delivery of a modern turbocharged engine. At highway speeds, the engine is refined and relaxed. Kia''s 7-year/200,000km warranty remains unique in this segment and provides significant peace of mind. Cape Town dealers report strong demand for the GT-Line specifically — the exterior design polarises but those who like it, really like it. Overall the Sportage GT-Line is an easy SUV to recommend — it''s well-specced, backed by the best warranty in the segment and drives well.

The Verdict

The Sportage GT-Line punches above its weight on specification, design and warranty coverage. At R619,900, it's competitive with European rivals that can't match its 7-year warranty. A strong recommendation for family SUV buyers.
