Pros
- Best-looking Fortuner ever
- Improved handling over standard
- Seven genuinely usable seats
- Proven diesel powertrain
Cons
- Expensive at R959,900
- Lower ground clearance than standard
- Tight boot with all seats up
The Fortuner GR Sport adds R130,000 to the price of a standard 4x4 Legend in exchange for sporty aesthetics and revised suspension. On paper, that''s a lot to spend on looks. In practice, the GR Sport is a more complete vehicle than its premium suggests.
The visual changes are significant and well-executed — the 20-inch alloys with their wider low-profile tyres give the Fortuner a planted, muscular stance that the standard model can''t match. The revised suspension tune improves high-speed motorway stability and reduces the standard Fortuner''s tendency toward excessive body roll in corners.
Seven seats remain and the third row is genuinely suitable for adults on journeys up to two hours. The 220L boot with all seats up is tight — road tripping with seven passengers requires creative luggage management. Fold the third row and 800L of space opens up.
The 2.8-litre GD-6 diesel continues to impress. It''s one of the best diesels currently available in South Africa — smooth, torquey, economical and proven through hundreds of thousands of kilometres of real-world South African use.
The Verdict
A worthy variant for buyers who want the Fortuner's legendary practicality with improved dynamics and head-turning aesthetics. The R959,900 price is hard to swallow, but the complete package justifies it for those who use all seven seats regularly.
