What we liked
- Strong performance
- Impressive cabin finish
- Competitive EV packaging
What we didn't
- Driver-assist tuning still needs work
- Rear visibility is tight
The BYD Seal arrives with fewer excuses than early Chinese EVs needed lands at the centre of the South African market conversation for one reason: context matters as much as raw specification. We tested, compared and interviewed around the subject to understand how it fits local roads, local buyers and local operating costs.
Its throttle response is strong without feeling cartoonish, cabin quality is materially improved and the chassis no longer falls apart when local tarmac stops being smooth.
That matters because South African buyers rarely shop in isolation. Fuel spend, tyre replacement, dealer support, insurance appetite and resale confidence all shape the final verdict far more than a brochure headline does.
The first-drive verdict is simple: South Africa's EV conversation is getting more competitive, and incumbents should be paying attention.
The verdict
Not perfect, but unquestionably serious and far more resolved than skeptics will expect.
