What we liked
- Best-in-class infotainment system
- Exceptional interior space
- 8-year battery warranty
- Genuine 340km real-world range in SA
What we didn't
- Charging infrastructure still developing in SA
- No rear-wheel or AWD option
- Brand awareness lower than Japanese/European rivals
BYD''s Atto 3 is not a compromise EV built down to a price. It''s a genuinely impressive product that combines Chinese manufacturing scale with a clear understanding of what EV buyers want. After a week of daily use in Johannesburg and Pretoria, the conclusions are largely positive.
The 150kW front-wheel-drive electric motor delivers performance that feels strong in urban conditions — 7.3 seconds to 100km/h is competitive against petrol alternatives in its price bracket. More significantly, the instant torque delivery makes city driving genuinely effortless; accelerating away from traffic lights with the surging pull of electric torque is addictive.
BYD''s "Blade Battery" technology uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry that the brand claims is inherently safer than conventional lithium-ion packs. The flat floor packaging allows exceptional interior space — rear legroom is genuinely impressive.
The 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen is the standout interior feature. Toggle it between portrait and landscape at a button press; the rotating mechanism is genuinely satisfying to operate. Build quality is competitive with Japanese alternatives at this price point.
Range in real-world South African conditions averages approximately 340km in mixed use — less than the WLTP claim of 420km but adequate for everyday Gauteng use with home charging.
The verdict
The BYD Atto 3 is the most compelling EV available in South Africa under R700,000. The rotating screen, impressive interior space and proven blade battery technology set it apart from alternatives. Infrastructure limitations are real but manageable with home charging.
