Volvo''s reputation for automotive safety is unmatched. The brand that invented the three-point seatbelt, pioneered SIPS side-impact protection and routinely achieves maximum Euro NCAP ratings has brought its safety philosophy to the EV segment with the XC40 Recharge.
The XC40 Recharge uses a 78kWh battery with twin electric motors producing a combined 300kW and 660Nm for the all-wheel-drive P8 variant we tested. 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds; WLTP range 418km; real-world South African mixed driving: approximately 340km.
The safety technology is comprehensive: City Safety with oncoming mitigation, Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving, Run-off Road protection (tightens seatbelts and stiffens suspension if the car senses it''s leaving the road) and a 360-degree camera system. On South Africa''s roads — where wildlife crossings, informal crossings and poor road surface visibility are genuine hazards — this technology has real value.
Volvo''s Google-based infotainment system with a 9-inch portrait display is clean and intuitive. Google Maps with real-time charging point integration makes route planning for SA''s emerging charging network straightforward. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also available.
At R969,000 for the Twin Motor P8 Performance, the XC40 Recharge is expensive. Volvo''s South African dealer network (14 points across the country) is smaller than BMW''s or Mercedes'', which is a consideration for service and resale. But for safety-conscious EV buyers, nothing else on South African sale matches the XC40''s accident-prevention credentials.
