South Africa''s used car market has been transformed by two years of new vehicle price inflation. Vehicles that were R300,000 new are now selling used for R180,000-200,000 — representing extraordinary value against the R400,000+ equivalent new vehicle. Here are the models that represent the best value under R200,000 in 2024. **Toyota Hilux 2.4 SRX 4x2 (2019, R185,000-195,000)** A three-year-old Hilux with typical South African mileage (45,000-60,000km) is one of the best value propositions in the market. Expect another 250,000+ km of service with proper maintenance. Resale value will remain strong. **Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 TSI Comfortline (2018, R175,000-190,000)** Second-generation Tiguan with DSG gearbox, Apple CarPlay and panoramic sunroof for under R190,000. Ensure timing chain service has been done (typically at 100,000km) and the DSG is serviced. **BMW 318i Sport Line (2018 F30, R175,000-195,000)** The F30 3 Series ages extremely well. 100kW is adequate for the compact saloon. Main costs to watch: cooling system components (common on BMW inline-fours) and run-flat tyre replacement. **Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi XLT 4x2 AT (2019, R190,000-200,000)** The outgoing Ranger was an excellent vehicle. The 2.2 diesel is simple and reliable. Watch for timing belt service history (due every 90,000km) and check for rust on the load bay floor. **Suzuki Jimny (2019 JB74, any condition, R165,000-195,000)** Jimnys hold their value unusually well — even with high mileage, they remain in demand. The small engine means low running costs. Mechanical simplicity means affordable repairs.
