The Toyota GR Yaris exists because of the World Rally Championship. To compete in WRC, Toyota needed to homologate a production version of its rally car — and the result is one of the most extraordinary hot hatches ever made.
The headline numbers: 192kW from a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine (an astonishing specific output of 120kW per litre), GR-FOUR all-wheel drive with adjustable torque split (front/rear ratios adjustable from 60:40 to 30:70), and a 6-speed manual gearbox. Kerb weight: 1,280kg. 0-100km/h: 5.5 seconds.
On Kyalami''s full circuit during a track day organised by Toyota SA, the GR Yaris revealed its extraordinary capability. In Track mode with rear-biased AWD, the car rotates into corners with GT3-car precision — then deploys its 360Nm through all four wheels on exit with controlled, adjustable traction. Three laps in, our test driver was setting times competitive with cars producing 50% more power.
On the road from Pretoria to Johannesburg, the GR Yaris is surprisingly liveable. The suspension is firm but not punishing. The Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel transmits excellent feel. The 290L boot is adequate for a weekend bag. The rear seat accommodates two adults in reasonable comfort.
At R699,900, the GR Yaris isn''t cheap. But context matters: for less than a BMW 330i, you''re buying a motorsport-derived AWD machine that lap Kyalami faster than many cars costing twice as much. In 30 years, GR Yaris values will look like original Golf GTI prices today.
This is a car worth buying now.
