Suzuki has brought its first fully electric SUV to South Africa, although it has not yet decided whether local motorists will be able to buy it.

The e Vitara was on display at the Festival of Motoring at Kyalami in August. The model shown had specifications proposed for South Africa, but Suzuki says a local launch will depend on market conditions. There is no confirmed release date or price.

That leaves Suzuki fans interested in electric cars waiting for a decision from the company. Suzuki has sold well in South Africa with smaller, petrol-powered models such as the Swift and Celerio. The e Vitara would be a different proposition: a battery-powered SUV aimed at buyers who want more space and are willing to consider moving away from petrol.

What comes with the e Vitara?

The version shown at Kyalami had two electric motors, one at each axle, producing a combined 135kW and 307Nm. It uses a 61kWh battery, with Suzuki quoting a range of up to 395km on a full charge.

That range could cover several days of commuting for some drivers, depending on how far they travel. Longer trips would require more planning around charging stops, while people without access to home charging would need to work out whether public charging fits their routines.

The all-wheel-drive model also uses Suzuki’s ALLGRIP-e system. Inside, the cabin has a digital instrument display, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, smartphone connectivity and wireless charging. The version displayed also featured driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

Suzuki has not confirmed that this exact version and equipment list would be offered locally if the vehicle gets the green light.

The question is how much it will cost

South African buyers still have to pay close attention to the upfront price of an electric vehicle. The e Vitara may have the range and equipment to appeal to families and commuters, but without a local price, it is hard to know where it would sit against other SUVs.

Suzuki’s reputation in this market has largely been built on cars that are relatively accessible to buy and run. An electric SUV priced well above the petrol models its customers know could make the switch difficult to justify.

Running costs would also depend on how owners charge the vehicle. Charging at home can be convenient for people with suitable parking and electrical access. Those who rely on public chargers would need to factor in their location, availability and cost.

The advertised range is another consideration. The claimed 395km is not a guarantee of the distance drivers will cover in everyday use. Speed, traffic, road gradients, weather and air-conditioning use can all affect how far a vehicle travels between charges.

Suzuki would be joining a busy market

Electric SUVs are no longer limited to a handful of models in South Africa. More manufacturers, including Chinese brands, are offering battery-powered vehicles, giving buyers a wider choice of sizes and prices.

Suzuki has an established dealer network and a customer base familiar with its compact cars. But buyers looking at an electric model will want to know more than its range and touchscreen size. Battery warranty terms, servicing, parts availability and support after the sale will also influence their decision.

The e Vitara would need to make sense for people comparing it with a petrol SUV, not just for motorists who have already decided they want an EV. A competitive price could help. A substantial price gap would make the decision harder, particularly for households watching their monthly expenses.

No local launch has been confirmed

Suzuki’s appearance at the Festival of Motoring gave South Africans a chance to see the e Vitara, but it was not a launch announcement.

The company has yet to confirm whether it will sell the vehicle here, how much it would cost or which specification it would offer. Until those details are released, buyers cannot make a proper comparison with other electric SUVs available locally.

For now, the e Vitara is a model Suzuki is considering for South Africa. Anyone hoping to buy one will have to wait for the company’s next announcement.
