Suzuki Jimny 5-Door: The Cult Classic Goes Practical
Suzuki's beloved off-roader finally gets a proper back seat — but has the magic been diluted?

The Suzuki Jimny has achieved something rare in automotive history: genuine cult status. The third-generation Jimny produced from 1998 to 2018 attracted a devoted following in South Africa for its combination of lightweight simplicity, genuine 4x4 ability and unique styling. The fourth-generation model introduced in 2018 continued that tradition with a modern twist.
Now Suzuki has answered the prayers of buyers who wanted more practicality — the Jimny 5-Door. Stretching 340mm compared to the three-door and adding a longer wheelbase (2,590mm vs 2,250mm), the five-door accommodates four adult passengers and 211L of boot space. The three-door managed just 85L.
Crucially, the mechanical fundamentals remain unchanged. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine produces 75kW and 130Nm — the same unit as the three-door. The Allgrip Pro part-time 4x4 system retains its low-range transfer case and ability to lock the central differential. Ground clearance of 210mm, approach angle of 36.2 degrees and departure angle of 50 degrees make the five-door genuinely capable off-road.
We drove the Jimny 5-Door through the Magaliesberg northwest of Johannesburg — a landscape of quartzite ridges, river crossings and farm tracks that suits the Jimny perfectly. In Low 4WD, the little Suzuki scrambled up rocky trails and through soft sandy sections that would have stuck larger, heavier SUVs.
The rear seats are usable for adults in a way the three-door's marginal fold-up bench never was. Legroom is adequate rather than generous, but the higher seating position and compact dimensions mean even tight spaces feel accessible.
At R549,900 — R50,000 more than the three-door — the five-door Jimny makes practical sense without compromising the character that made the original special. Highly recommended.
