In January 2022, Chinese automotive brands held 4.1% of South Africa''s new vehicle market. In October 2024, that figure is 12.3% — representing an extraordinary gain in under three years. The brands leading this charge are Haval (the largest Chinese brand in SA with 4.2% market share), BYD (3.1%), Chery (2.8%), GWM (1.4%) and BAIC (0.8%). **How Chinese Brands Win on Value** The Haval H6 at R469,900 with 12.3-inch wireless CarPlay, 360-camera and ADAS package is the clearest example. The equivalent Volkswagen Tiguan with comparable specification costs R779,900 — a gap of R310,000 that is increasingly difficult for established brands to justify to value-conscious South African buyers. **Warranty as Competitive Weapon** Chinese brands have deployed extended warranties as trust-building tools. Haval''s 5-year/100,000km vehicle warranty plus 3-year service plan; BYD''s 6-year/150,000km vehicle warranty plus 8-year/160,000km battery warranty. These figures embarrass industry-standard 3-year/100,000km offerings. **Dealer Response** Established dealers are investing in certified pre-owned programmes, enhanced customer experience and extended service plan bundling to retain customers. "We can''t compete on price alone, so we compete on relationship, trust and the full ownership experience," said one Johannesburg Toyota dealer principal who asked not to be named. **The Resale Question** Residual values for Chinese vehicles have historically been poor. But this is changing — WesBank data shows Haval H6 three-year residuals improving from 48% (2021 models) to 58% (2024 models). As the brands mature in South Africa, residuals will continue improving. **Outlook** Industry analysts project Chinese brands reaching 18-20% of SA new vehicle sales by 2027. This will reshape the competitive landscape significantly for Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford.
